The characters become more engaging and likeable as you read, and you find yourself growing with them, wondering with them, striving with them. Paul J Rogers’s neat, neat, neat tropical-noir crime tale unspools in a used future that gelatinizes under solar malice, glows fluorescent, and seeps heavy sweat. It’s in a multi-something world that the Blowfish coppers, sharp lasses and lads chipped for smooth coms, look to grab up the doers of dirty deeds done not so cheap. Rogers’s fine début gets us out into deep water: how will he plot the next leg of the crossing and fulfill his promise that “the Khanada Crime Story continues”? Inquiring minds want to know how the pyramid’s top and the bottom skank together.

Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put this book down…it almost made me late for class! The Blowfish Detachment is a grand slam of a novel. On first base, the plot setup, a grisly cold case mystery that forced me to keep turning pages; on second, the fully fleshed-out lead characters, whose tense relationship and detective work keep the pace flowing; on third, the meticulously nuanced setting– utterly imaginative, yet somehow familiar– its peculiarities and charms exist on a level of detail and internal consistency that was continuously surprising and deeply engulfing. What drives all these runs home is the quality of the prose itself, the masterful control of language displays verve, attitude, style, and wit. The book was a wild and fun ride. Totally recommended!

His novel moves the main characters along with every line. The supporting characters and the landscape bring a life of their own. Every detail giving it all a full 3-D life as real as you and me.
